i suspect it depends upon whose mother we are benchmarking mercy.

That's true. Some mothers are more merciful than others. Of course, in a Christian worldview we don't exactly get a choice about which god.

Of course, the God you're describing doesn't resemble the one I learned about... but that doesn't matter much does it? If he's made up in the first place, you can make him be as cruel as you want when ranting against him!

Really? Are you not a Christian?

I am a Christian - a Catholic even, a sect often criticized for its preaching of hellfire and damnation. But I don't ever remember getting that (okay, I remember briefly one class in elementary school where we were told that committing a mortal sin would condemn us to hell, unless we repented, but it was an isolated incident.)

And we were taught that we could ALWAYS be forgiven, no matter how egregious our mistakes. On the other hand, I'm sure there were plenty of PARENTS who tried to use the threat of hell to get their children to behave. That's not religion's fault, that's just the abuse of it to maintain power. It's bad parenting.

My question remains. God is merciful unless and until you break His rules. And even in the Catholic tradition (by no stretch of the imagination a 'fire and brimstone' kind of church) there are "mortal sins".

Now, I would agree that much of what is taught is an exercise in maintaining power.

And I don't think I was necessarily cruel. Derisive perhaps, but not cruel.
