But, for me an (West)European, it's almost an impossible story:
Why would she need to collect money for breast-cancer treatment/operation, including reconstructive surgery?
Indeed, all of that would (is) taken care by the national health insurance. Whatever her financial or professional situation (including out of work). The only thing she might lack if she had no extra private insurance would be a private room. She would have to stay (depending of country) in double or up to 4 bed room (and in the UK/NHS maybe still larger wards in some places)
