Jon Stewart Catches FNC’s Sean Hannity in a Big Fat Lie »
Posted By capj71 1 week, 2 days ago in Political NewsIs Jon Stewart the only man on television willing to hold Fox News accountable? Tonight on The Daily Show, Stewart called out FNC’s Sean Hannity for not only inflating the attendance number from Michele Bachmann’s healthcare protest, but also for trying to pass off footage from the 9/12 protest as evidence of the crowd size. Check out the video.

As he should. any so-called news organization that uses old footage like that to show a larger crowd at a rally should be called on the carpet.

It could have been a mistake, but Fox certainly seems to have it's share of mistakes when it comes to showing footage of a "news" event.

Funny these people claim to always warn us against "the enemies of America". Yet these "great Americans" have no issue with revisionism or outright lies to promote their agenda.
Reply
Reminds me of a visit by Ollie North to my local mega Christian Bookstore. Scores of people stood in line for hours to see this "great American hero". Funny I watched 90% of the Iran Contra hearings and I don't recall anything heroic about his actions in that circumstance? Yet put him on FoxNews
and give him the can't fail assignment of praising America's vets and narrating war stories and he is automatically rehabbed? He never admitted to any wrongdoing and he never will. Anything was justified when it came to saving Reagan's presidency. And in many's minds today the same thought process remains. He's a fine Christian man to these people just like Mark Sanford. This thus appears to provide these men with carte blanche as to their actions. But a scoundrel is still a scoundrel no matter the cloak he hides himself behind.-

Irony is that *great* Americans like Ollie fueled the very problems we are faced with now.
Reply
We continue to create and manufacture the problems we try to solve. Our foreign policy will become conservative when we stop doing that. Sending arms and resources to groups and states that we eventually go to war with cannot possibly be considered conservative. We continue to do it today with our reliance upon foreign energy. We are funding the very people we are at odds with.
That is so stupid that it would seem that could only be by design.

"In response to Hannity’s claim that 20,000 people were at the protest, Stewart said, “Anywhere between twenty and forty thousand people or as The Washington Post put it 10,000. The biggest catch was when Stewart caught Hannity using old video from the 9/12 rally.
Stewart said, “That was weird, because when that clip started it was a clear fall day in Washington, D.C., not a cloud in the sky, the leaves have changed. It’s well attended, but sparse. All of the sudden the trees turn green again, and its cloudy and it looks like thousands and thousands of people of more people arrived. If I didn’t know any better I would think they just put two different days together and acted like they didn’t…It seems Sean Hannity used footage of a bigger crowd from a totally different event to make last week’s GOP healthcare rally appear more heavily attended.”

Gee Comm, I'm not even a regular fox news viewer and I know they put out 4 yeAR OLD CIIA INFO on Al Qaeda possibly starting California fires as recent info... and how many times have they purposefully misidentified Hagel, Specter and others as being in the opposite party when they strayed from far right dogma? Google it you fool and open you bigotted mind a little!
Reply
No wonder that fox news viewers only scored 20% right in that basic knowledge PIPA Study, lowest of any regular news viewers! Keep showing your ignorant bigotry there, Comm, you are good at it! -

Will you "believe" that Fox News distorts facts when you realize that they are the ONLY news organization to actually SUE for the "right to lie, distort, and fabricate the news" as a defense against the charge of illegally firing a reporter who refused to lie for them?

You may not want to "believe" it, but it doesn't change the fact that they do, and apparently don't even care who knows it. Why else would they use it as a legal defense in a labor suit? -

seems to me the Stewart and colbert are news shows with a entertainment aspect to them, and if that is so and you say FOX news is an "entertainment" show and they cover the news in a talk show format, then what makes those 2 any different then Fox ??? except for the obvious answer that they bash fox and the left loves that ???

NEWSFLASH:

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert aren't "news shows" and the fact they are on COMEDY CENTRAL should have been your first tip off. It doesn't mean what they say isn't accurate, but of course their shows have an "entertainment aspect" to them.
Comedy Central.......duh.
Fox NEWS, on the other hand, is SUPPOSED to be NEWS....because it's on a network that is dedicated to, you know, a 24-hour NEWS cycle?
Your comment above reminds me of when Jon Stewart went on Capital Gang and told Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala that they were hurting America with their lack of seriousness when reporting the news........Tucker Carlson actually got upset and tried to defend his lack of newsworthiness on his NEWS SHOW by attacking Jon Stewart's lack of serious news questioning on his COMEDY CENTRAL SHOW.
Here's a link to that clip, in case you missed it. In my opinion, it's the best Jon Stewart clip EVER...lol

FoxNews, that most non-American of broadcasters (you do know that it is not American owned, don't you, PatrioticAmerican?) puts forth blatant propaganda and lies. -

Reply
Because Colbert and Stewart openly admit to being ENTERTAINMENT...FOX pretends to be a news channel, and pretends they are reporting real news, despite fighting for the right to lie.
And why is it that I have yet to see any of the conservatives here comment on or defend the fact that FOX went to court for the right to "distort" the news they report? Ever? *Shaking head sadly*

What is really sad for America is that 2 "News Style" Entertainment Shows provide more factual reporting than what are considered actual News Programs.

It'd be really funny if the video clips Stewart displayed were actually accurate. The first video showed deciduous variety of trees such as maples & beech trees that shed their leaves annually & change colors. Those along the mall area could very well be of the evergreen variety that either don't change or do so much later in the season. The video was taken from different angles in different areas.
Reply
Either way,, news media often use generic video clips depicting scenes when live feed isn't readily available.
I think the point at hand from FOX was to display a gathering in general & not necessarily over inflate the crowd numbers. Stewart could be right but that's some serious egg he'll have to remove from his face if he's wrong...-

No...when a news network is claiming to be showing coverage of a specific event, showing stock coverage of any event is non-credible. I mean, why not just show the crowd of millions at the Obama inauguration? That was a crowd shot too, was it not? From your point of ethical excusing, that would be acceptable in that it was a gathering in general and using such a gathering in general shot to depict a gathering held by Bachmann would then be legit, right? No distortions at all here... -

A valiant effort, but the trees along the National Mall are all deciduous (I've been there). While there may have been some leaves on particular trees, it is unreasonable to say that certain trees would still be in full green. Further, the videos match exactly from the 9/12 rally, right down to the signs and flags.

I'm not sure how the news feed was represented by FOX. Stewart took a soft shoe approach not over criticizing FOX but more or less "questioning" the differences in the two different shots.
Reply
Again, I reiterate, showing comparable video of a certain area with people attending a rally I wouldn't think would be anything to get in a fuss over. If FOX had grafted video with Bachmann in it to purposely deceive viewers then I'd find that as being suspect.
I noticed you didn't comment on my theory that the video might actually be accurate. No biggie to me either way,, you see it as ethics,, I see it as a necessary logistical issue. -

global,, here's some glaring insight for you & Conqueror both.
Reply
Disclaimer: I have no affiliation with FNC so I don't have to offer apologies for them. Possibly,, if not for you incredible prejudice you wouldn't view my comments as such. More intelligent examination would simply show I offered a possible explanation of what the videos could be.
First of all, the author of this skewed blog (capj71),, seems to relish the fact that Stewart caught Hannity in a lie. Stewart more or less was showing a possible "gotcha" moment in his daily entertainment style. Labelling something a "lie" borders on slander unless offered as opinion. I suppose small fish like himself & others don't calculate those risks in the blogosphere.
If a news outlet picks up a random AP or Reuters story & choose to illustrate something as generic as a crowd they may substitute footage simply to emphasize a point. Crowds are generic in form,, no great specifics as to a group of people gathering so to me this entire article is a non issue. You could certainly find far more credence in the video feed MSNBC used a few months back depicting the guy carrying a rifle over his shoulder & misrepresenting it as being far more of an issue. I guess that all depends on your overall bias.
As I stated, I'm not sure of the video as being accurate either way. I've got a feeling you don't have a clue as well but you call me an apologist.
Read through the 50 or so comments on here spewing harsh opinions based on something that was for entertainment means only. It seems intelligent people would or could look a little closer into the intent of things before they get all bent out of shape. Of course that's always easy when one doesn't have all the facts lined up & can take a comedian's words out of context.
Reasonable & more seasoned people take a deeper approach,, you guys try it sometime,, you might like it.....-

Then you didn't actually watch the video side-by-side comparisons. You just can't accept that your favored news outlet actively misrepresented the facts. Dan Rather was disgraced for less than this travesty.
