Obama Suggests Still Possible Hasan May Have Cracked Under Stress »
Posted By avoth 2 weeks, 6 days ago in NewsPRESIDENT OBAMA: "Well, look, we -- we have seen, in the past, rampages of this sort. And in a country of 300 million people, there are going to be acts of violence that are inexplicable. Even within the extraordinary military that we have -- and I think everybody understands how outstanding the young men and women in uniform are under the most severe stress -- there are going to be instances in which an individual cracks. I think the questions that we're asking now and we don't have yet complete answers to is, is this an individual who's acting in this way or is it some larger set of actors? You know, what are the motivations? Those are all questions that I think we have to ask ourselves. Until we have these answers buttoned down, I'd rather not comment on it."

Klarissa secondary traumetization is a very serious issue. After hearing stories of horrible things its very easy for the listener to become impacted by them. When you hear stories of people you may consider to be your people being killed, some innocent, some children, some women, you can't tell me its not traumatizing.

" Stress, my foot - he has never seen combat. Maybe it was the dance hall visits that did him in."

Again I've heard three star generals, majors, lt. majors, et cetera say that there's more than enough stress to go around for ALL our soldiers, including those not yet deployed, especially for those who deal with returning, wounded, damaged vets on a regular basis.
But I guess you know better than the military who actually serve, right? -

I guess that means since you were never attacked by a terrorist you didnt worry at all about attacks and it should also mean you arent worried at all about Obama and how he is defending the US (which btw seems to be quite a bit better then the last occupant who was busy selling the management of out ports to friends of the terrorists)

I posted about this in another thread that didn't get much discussion but it fits the story so I'll just copy and paste.

You know I was trying to rationalize this today, which maybe can't be done, but I think it would be interesting to see if he was so radical at the start of the war. What would drive a man to kill his fellow soldiers in the name of the enemy? Why did it take him until now to do so? Why was he in the armed forces in the first place?
I think these questions can be easily answered. And no, the answer isn't he was always a Muslim extremist just like the rest of them!
Think about it this way. You work as a psychiatrist and are of a particular faith. The country you work for, and the soldiers you treat, go to war against an enemy that is of your faith. When these soldiers come home you have to listen to their stories and help them through them.
So what type of stories would this man be hearing? War is war. Bad things happen. Innocent people die, and our people sometimes kill innocent people. Sometimes they rape people, sometimes they torture people. Some times they desecrate the bodies of the people they kill. War drives people to do unthinkable things, on both sides. And sometimes people don't feel the way they think they should afterwards. Maybe the don't feel anything. If a soldier kills a man, or a woman, or maybe even a child, and feels nothing, who does he tell? Either he tells nobody and lives in an emotional hell for the rest of their lives, or they tell a loved one, or a psychiatrist.
So I wonder just how many stories this guy heard about our soldiers killing people he would consider his fellow people. How many stories of unthinkable things did he hear? I think after hearing stories like this it can definitely take its toll on the person hearing them. Maybe it grew to the point where he gained a hatred towards Americans and his fellow soldiers for what they were doing to his people and it drove him to commit this atrocity.
I'm not trying to make excuses for him, what he did was horrible and hes going to be executed because of it, I'm just trying to find the motive behind what he did.

My Fellow Americans: Why are you so hard on O? When you are one of them of course you are going to make excuses, rationalize, or find an easy out for a fellow Muslim countryman killing the enemy. Which just happens to be Us!

These are the kinds of questions that a Wellesley professor might peruse over, but it is not Presidential to contemplate OUT LOUD what the motivations or frame of mind this killer was in.

Obama just doesn't understand his position ... maybe never will.-

I agree partially with what you said and usually the President shouldn't contemplate these things out loud. The problem is the potential for backlash against the Muslim community. We've already seen it from that guy in Florida that attacked an Orthodox Jew who was asking for directions and then called the police and reported that an Arab tried to rob him. Hes trying to keep the backlash down by putting the blame on something other than his religion. I think its very appropriate for the President to try and reduce violence within the country, and the point he makes is a very valid one.

But that's not what he said.

He merely pointed out that no one yet knows what really happened.
How is it that you think you do? Do you know the shooter? Perhaps the FBI should be talking to you. Perhaps you are a mind reader. Do educate us about the basis for your conclusion.
I agree about bringing troops home, however. Any government we install will never be considered legitimate domestically and will require unending support to prop it up. If we really value self determination then we should step out of the way. -

everyone keeps trying to point to this or that in order to try and formualte a theory as to how we could have missed this or not seen the warning signs and acted.

but what no one talks about is the fact that hasan was a psychiatrist, which immediately made the situation, or the idea that we should have done something, or the notion that this could have been avoided, all that much more tricky and uncertain.
cause if its one group of people that tends to get a free pass (even though they just might be the craziest group of all) its the group who are usually on the other end of the diagnosis. the psychiatrists. -

You all HATE Obama - he can do NOTHING right in your eyes - period.

Admit it and GET it OVER with.
If Obama had said NOTHING about this, you would have criticized him for saying nothing about it!
If Obama read every comment you posted and suddenly tried to cater to your whims and opinions and views, you would STILL hate him and probably criticize him for doing it!
You all are beyond all manner of common sense and legitimate thinking.-

If everyone loved him, what would you have to complain about.
And, it isn't Obama, it is the programs Pelosi and Reid are shoving through with Obama's blessing. -

Nice insult guy. Does that constitute your idea of legitimate thinking???
Now, what did Bush do right in your eyes? What has the GOP done right in recent years? Have you ever thought that your own hatred has clouded your vision?

Of course he could have been traumatized .

What bothers me is the above comments saying this happens to people doing any kind of counseling - so somewhere the army failed in its mission to help anyone in this position to have plenty of help themselves.
I thought that he was where he was because he had been removed form his position? Obviously they should have done a lot more that that for him.
Outside of that, it appears that he has a long history of anti-americanism - and why was it allowed to continue. -

Of course it's a large possibility. We simply don't know what triggered this guy. The title of this post assumes far too much.

The irony is, Hasan was working on a procedure to identify Muslims who might have a moral conflict with shooting other Muslims and let them honorably bow out of service as conscientious observers. In hindsight, it looks like a huge cry for help. -

I have read every post on this thread and I am going to repeat something that I just posted on another thread. I really think that after reading some of the remarks here that it bears repeating. What makes this country great is the constitution which guarantees everyone a fair trial. The concept of a fair trial is not adopted universally by most countries. The United States although not perfect, is a model for the world. Our belief that a person is innocent until proven guilty is one of our greatest legal and moral strengths. What ever you may think of this person it is alleged at this point until he is tried. If convicted it then becomes fact. I love this country more than anything in the world. I will not lower myself or my belief in the justice of this country to call this person a terrorist, jihadist or any other "ist" until he is tried, the facts are shown and weighed and if the facts warrant it, he is then proven to be a terrorist. Those of you who have already made up your minds are no better than those in the south who used to lynch blacks just because of the color of their skin. I suggest that we all wait until the facts are born out in a legal, just trial which he will receive in this country.
