PALM SPRINGS, California - A Palm Springs man who was never in the military has been charged with wearing the Navy’s highest honor. Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles say 39-year-old Steven Burton was photographed wearing the Navy Cross along with the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and other medals. The U.S. attorney’s office said that a Navy commander attending her high school reunion noticed Burton wearing a Marine uniform with the medals and contacted the FBI.

Disgraceful, purely disgraceful, maybe a proper sentencing would be that this turd sign up for a military hitch of his choosing.

Seen this before on the Army side. We called them "PX warriors" because they bought the ribbons in the post exchange rather than go through the usual route of actually earning them.

Honestly, I didn't know this was illegal. In my college days, I had a Purple Heart that I got at a garage sale pinned to my jacket. It was meant to symbolize the 'wounds' of an uncaring and corporate-dominated world (or whatever early-twenty-something angst).

Though this particular guy seems like a jackass and a pretender, I would think the wearing of medals within a certain context would be protected free speech.
