A federal district court ruled Tuesday that a special Christian license plate mandated by the South Carolina legislature violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie held that the plate, which was to feature a large yellow cross, a stained-glass window and the words “I Believe,” clearly gives favored government treatment to one faith. In a summary judgment ruling, she ordered state officials not to issue the plate.

I think this is definitely a proper manifestation of separation of church and state. The state should not sponsor any religious advertisement.

Imagine people with Muslim, atheist, Wiccan, etc. messages, so it becomes either a popularity contest or what is more likely, a strong source of peer pressure and new way to ostracize "others". No one is stopping anyone from placing other religious messages on their vehicles.

There is an element of self-refferent humor to all of this.

I thought it was the Pharisees who displayed their religion prominently for all to behold, and did their good works "to be seen of men."

Maybe the license plate should read "I believe, but do not understand."
