Free clinic exposes real health care needs in New Orleans »
Posted By bubba2 6 days, 22 hours ago in Health & Fitness22 percent of Louisiana's population is uninsured, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. A Harvard Medical School study released in September found that 45,000 Americans die annually because they lack health insurance, 2.5 times more than was estimated in a 2002 study.
Some of those people found temporary relief Saturday when the National Association of Free Clinics, a nonprofit organization, sponsored a free Communities Are Responding Everyday, or CARE, health clinic at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

By the end of the day in New Orleans, more than 1,000 people had been examined. Doctors said they discovered many cases of cancer, diabetes and hypertension, and four people were so ill they were sent immediately to hospitals.
Over 90% of the people examined were found to have an illness or condition that needed treatment. Some of those people had not been seen by a doctor in ten years.
Over 1200 permanent clinics in America today.
The National Association of Free Clinics will have seen over 8 million people this year - that is DOUBLE the numbers they treated in 2008.
Also, 83% of the people seen by Free Clinics HAVE JOBS but either have no insurance or can't afford the insurance that is 'available'.
It is a MYTH - a total myth - that most of the uninsured are unemployed or homeless or are illegals or are 'on welfare'.
But the opponents of health care reform would have everyone believe that in order to block any real change that would allow every American in this country to have insurance and health care that they can AFFORD. -

The non-profit group providing the free clinics works via DONATIONS, not from any government money.

So, if all of the Americans who are against any health care reform (along with the rest of America) would donate to the National Association of Free Clinics or to Remote Area Medical or to other similar organizations, then maybe we could just have enough free clinics around the country to provide medical care for the uninsured.
But, just like hunger and homelessness and poverty, there are not enough private, non-profit groups around that have enough resources to handle or address or solve the problem. -

This particular health care 'clinic' was funded with donations, called for by MSNBC. 1.7 million was raised. I gave $100.00, and have put this group on my permanent donations list. They are NOT funded by 'government.' This is a tragedy klarissa. When are you going to wake up?
