"How low will the new American president go for the world's royalty?
Reply
This photo will get Democrat President Obama a lot of approving nods in Japan this weekend, especially among the older generation of Japanese who still pay attention to the royal family living in its downtown castle.
Very low bows like this are a sign of great respect and deference to a superior.
Obama could receive some frowns back home as he did for his not-quite-this-low-or-maybe-about-the-same-bow to the Saudi king not so long ago."
From the LA Times blog, no less.
So Obama thinks that the Japanese Emperor is superior to the President of the United States.
Where is Obama's protocol team?
What it comes down to?? Most people would be proud to be the President of the United States, and greet foreign rulers/presidents as equals.-

You people are losing your minds over Obama respecting a cultural norm in Japan, but I am left with one nagging question........................were you this upset when Bush traipsed around the White House grounds HOLDING HANDS with the Saudis?
Reply
I don't remember an outrage over this action. It was defended as a "cultural norm" and he was given kudos for doing so. Yet, he wasn't in the Middle East at the time.....he was on AMERICAN SOIL....in the WHITE HOUSE...and he HELD HANDS with ARABS. Where was your outrage then? Where was your HOMOPHOBIA then? I mean, grown men holding hands? You people lose your mind when Obama has a beer on the White House lawn, but you had nothing to say when your boy Bush was dancing around that same lawn with Arab royalty, hand-in-hand.
Personally, I think it only does us well when our leaders can conform to other cultural norms when dealing with leaders from other parts of the world. It shows confidence when you can step outside of yourself and do the uncommon in order to make others comfortable. Obama is one who can do this. Actually, so was Bush, as evidenced by his willingness to hold hands with Arabs without feeling threatened. So I am not criticizing Bush for his hand-holding episodes at the White House. I am merely pointing out yet another incidence of pure hypocrisy on the part of the right where Obama is concerned.
You people aren't nearly as concerned with America and her reputation as you are with trying to destroy Obama, regardless of what that destruction might cost America in the long run. Every time these ridiculous criticisms see the light of day, you prove this fact more and more. And if your hate wasn't so blinding, you'd see this fact for yourself.

Hi Klarissa,

I accidentally rated your comment positive. This doesn't mean that I intended to rate it negatively, but rather that I was going to reply to it and hit the wrong button. I don't give negative ratings. If I don't like a comment, I simply respond to the point of contention. I will give credit where it is due, however, and tell you that I appreciate the fact that you are always civil even though we don't agree on much.
What I was planning on saying is Bush seemed to spend a great deal of time in Texas clearing brush. Traveling to maintain relations with our economic partners is doing his job as president. It isn't really avoiding anything. Asia is rising as an economic region and we want to be a part of that market. As we learned in our business classes, a fair amount of doing business in other parts of the world is showing respect and observing protocol. Walking around with a sway and a swagger doesn't do much to promote our cause.

Flashback: NYT blasts Clinton for … almost bowing to Akihito

It wasn’t a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.
he New York Times didn’t have much to say after Obama’s bow to Abdullah despite having scolded Clinton in this manner for almost bowing to Akihito. Now that Obama has done “the unthinkable” twice, and this time to Akihito, will the New York Times have anything to say about it? Will any of the national news media inquire as to whether the Obama administration has changed American protocol from its 233-year norm of not bowing to royalty, and exactly what “hope and change” that represents?-

Even the New York Times knew it was a mistake. And now everyone knows that US protocol specifically decries bowing to royalty. If it was wrong in 1995, it's wrong today. What was 1776 about, anyway? Does Obama even understand U.S. history?

Seven months ago, the White House insisted that Obama didn’t bow to Saudi King Abdullah, understanding the terrible breach in presidential protocol that it represented. They tried to tell reporters that Obama was picking something up off the floor, which the video clearly shows was a lie (at the link). Take a look at the picture of Obama’s bow to the son of Hirohito. Do you see anything on that immaculate floor that requires retrieval?
American Presidents do not bow to royalty. In fact, heads of state do not bow or genuflect to each other in the normal course of diplomacy. At least, they didn’t until this amateur came into office and failed to learn from the first time he did it. What will the White House say this time? He got stomach cramps?-

exactly and you don't get it. To present an image of subservience to any leader connotates weakness, a lack of leadership. He is supposed to be the leader of the Free World. It;s time he acted like it. He doesnt act like the alpha dog. Power is projection and perception. Each act like this diminished that perception. The Mullahs, Chavez, the Castros, Putin, Medyev, Kahdafi and others must be quaking in their collective boots today. Pity you dont understand

Look, the President of United States Mr. Barack Obama knows the sure path to life and success. Many things already went wrong which he inherited from the past government. He is wisely aimed at maikng peace; I know some people will never advocate peace whatsoever and I believe some profound, humble and famous set could "quench" wars without pulling any fire triggers. He is a cultured strong minded leader. Those world famous leaders know it well as they'll not take him(Obama) and the US for granted.

Canadians still bow to England’s Queen; so do Australians. Americans shake hands. If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about? But Mr. Clinton, alas, is not the only one since George Washington who has seemed not quite to know what to make of monarchs.
…But the “thou need not bow” commandment from the State Department’s protocol office maintained a constancy of more than 200 years. Administration officials scurried to insist that the eager-to-please President had not really done the unthinkable.-

You need to get out more and probably do a little more book learning about what is considered appropriate.
First, obama committed a serious protocol faux pas. He should have kept his hands at his side and bowed, first to the emperor then the empress. This would have allowed the emperor/empress to respond in kind. THEN he could have offered his hand for a handshake. Offering his hand at the same time bowing could almost be considered a lack of respect because he didn't allow the emperor to respond, i.e. obama controlled the greeting, therefore there was no show of respect.
Secondly, the depth of his bow basically shows obsequiousness. It IS NOT what is considered appropriate between equals. It certainly is not what heads of state should do when greeting each other.
I fully expect that obama felt he could gain some kind of political advantage by doing this overblown bow but all he has done is show his inexperience and lack of coaching. His protocol folks should be taken out to a wall and shot! -

But in a modern, non-assuming manner that has become a trademark for Emperor Akihito, he offered the uncertain Canadian ministers a royal palm to be pumped for a handshake.
Oda, who is of Japanese ancestry, also bowed.
"The bow came naturally to me," she said.
The confusion is understandable. It's not every day the ministers get to meet the descendant one of the world's longest-lasting monarchies, dating back more than 2,600 years to Jimmu in the seventh century BC, who until relatively recently, would have been considered divine.
For some old-fashioned Japanese, Akihito, who was accompanied by the Empress Michiko, is still a god-king.
A spokesman for the Japanese embassy said the proper protocol is to bow, but it is also proper to follow the emperor's lead. It also appropriate to engage the emperor in conversation if he starts the discussion.
The embassy also sent out an advisory informing the media they are "not permitted to call out to Their Majesties nor "
