"Understanding and Combatting Terrorism, USMC Major S.M. Grass, 1989:
Terrorism is a psychological weapon and is directed to create a general climate of fear. As one definition cogently notes, "terror is a natural phenomenon, terrorism is the conscious exploitation of it." Terrorism utilizes violence to coerce governments and their people by inducing fear.
William Josiger, Fear Factor: The Impact of Terrorism on Public Opinion in the United States and Great Britain, 2006:
At its heart terrorism is about fear. While terrorist attacks destroy, maim and kill, the intended audience for these attacks is almost always the whole body politic and the terrorist's goal is to strike fear into their hearts.
GOP House Leader John Boehner, condemning Obama's decision to bring Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to New York for trial, yesterday:
The Obama Administration’s irresponsible decision to prosecute the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks in New York City puts the interests of liberal special interest groups before the safety and security of the American people.
This is literally true: the Right's reaction to yesterday's announcement -- we're too afraid to allow trials and due process in our country -- is the textbook definition of "surrendering to terrorists." It's the same fear they've been spewing for years. As always, the Right's tough-guy leaders wallow in a combination of pitiful fear and cynical manipulation of the fear of their followers. Indeed, it's hard to find any group of people on the globe who exude this sort of weakness and fear more than the American Right."
Terrorism is a way that cowards try to change the world.
They inflict their insanity upon the innocent.
Really doesn't matter who does it, it is all the same.
I prefer open trials, lets get to the truth.
Lets not torture people to get answers we seek. Lets find out what really happened and who was really involved.
Terrorists do not frighten me, as much as they disgust me.
I am more concerned with the incompetance of governments to deal effectively with the terrorists, as they should be dealt with. -

Grandpa, I'm really surprised at you with this, "This is literally true: the Right's reaction to yesterday's announcement -- we're too afraid to allow trials and due process in our country" That is a crock of crap and you know it. First time I have ever seen you deliberately mislead to argue a point.

No...The Right has opposed any form of open prosecution of anyone associated with the War on Terror.

You Lie!
The Left refusing to do so is an absolute betrayal as well...
I am sick of them both.
Americans for America!
Screw our dear leaders...Time to fire them and get some new help around the Capitol.

I base that upon the actions of Bush and the continued denial of these criminals right to face their accusers in a court of law.
The extreme right has allowed these terrorists to gain world wide support from other groups of terrorists.
Put them on trial and show the world we are not afraid to do what is right.
If that is misleading, I personally do not see it.
As I've said, I'm not afraid of the terrorists, I'm dismayed and disgusted with the actions of our leaders from both parties who fail to show the right leadership qualities needed in this case.-

I share this feeling. Something has gone terribly wrong.
Something is gonna have to give...we are being led to failure and that just isn't the Way.
Divided we fall. -

Terrorists don't have rights. And enemy soldiers don't get trials unless they are for war crimes. And since they fight for no country we must hold them until the war is over. Then there is the fact that by the end of his presidency GWB had already taken over 500 out of the 700 detainees in Gitmo and sent them back to the native lands. So to say that Bush was denying any of them anything is bs too.
"Put them on trial and show the world we are not afraid to do what is right"
Well if you give them Constitutional rights then you have to immediately release everyone of them as there were no search warrants allowing the soldiers to break down their doors and arrest them. All the evidence against them goes right out the window.

Locking people up in prison indefinitely without a trial is NOT the way we do things in America. That is how things are done in Iran and North Korea. The previous admin was so afraid of terrorists that it abandoned this basic American principal. When the terrorists cause us to abandon our principals then they have won. Kudos to President Obama for the courage to do the right thing.

Indeed, they seem to fear everything, especially change. Read any of their posts, they reek of fear and hate of anything or anyone different from themselves. Ignorance breeds fear and a fearful population is easy to control. Look at all the trigger words they use in their articles and posts...communism, terrorism, fascism, socialism, all designed to garner a gut reaction from the herd. I must admit they fascinate me, i cannot imagine what it must be like to spend your days looking for things to hate and fear.

The left's biggest fear is the Obama will mess up the economy more that he has already, put into place a health care plan that is merely a means to force everyone to have the same amount of money in their pockets [take from the rich who earned it, and hand it out to the poor], and that Iraq will flame up and that Afghanistan (Obama does not want victory there) will be a horrid quagmire.

What a hoot - blaming the sitting President for the mess he inherited. I suppose your answer to the present dilemma would be to give a great big tax break to the people who don't need one?

Yeah - that would really get things moving. -

"The left's biggest fear is the Obama will mess up the economy". Not the Bankers who gave loans to people whom they knew could not repay and so on. Well, capitalism has well and truly shafted you but you don't seem to mind. Perhaps you have an independent income and don't need to worry about Healthcare Insurance as most Americans have to do. I recommend, from experience, the European System of National Healthcare. You should kick the Insurance companies into touch and go for it. But you won't because Corporate America rules OK! -
