The Clipper chip controversy of the 90s, John Poindexter's Total Information Awareness (TIA) system pushed in the aftermath of 9-11, backroom deals between the Federal government and the Internet service industry, and the Patriot Act have ushered in a new era of Internet censorship, something just half a decade ago computer programmers averred was impossible given the nature of the web. Censoring the Internet is equivalent to book burning, and the burning of people has already begun. It began long before the Internet was invented. It began with the totalitarian mass media. For a few years, the Internet offered an alternative, but those days are over.

Netscape was a free for all, then came AOL propeller if you could find it. Since then, AOL has used every trick to render propeller impotent. Now, I find that my oldest submissions are disappearing every day along with a high proportion of my propped articles. I can't even complain to the staff, because they have disappeared, and most of the rest of the Internet is worse.
